Novel Undereway

I’ve started writing a new YA novel about two teenage brothers who climb one of the tallest mountains in Alaska. Set around 1980, the novel will be loosely based on my own life. My brother and I had military training in repelling, mountaineering, and arctic survival. I’ve published numerous articles about climbing and even spelunking (caving). I’m very excited about it.

Weekend Connection

Got to read at the Binghamton International Literature Festival held this weekend at the Know Theatre downtown. Stanley Barkan, the publisher of my new bilingual poetry book, The Indian Prophet, was there. Stan’s the publisher of Cross-Cultural Communications Press, which is celebrating 40 years of excellence in publishing poetry worldwide.

Cute as a Button!

Ayiana is now 16 months old and walking and talking like crazy.

A glimpse of Alaska!

johnroadhouse.jpgjohncabin.jpgjohnanddave.jpgdenali.jpgI spent a week in Alaska during late January, the coldest and darkest time of the year. On average, it was -26F daily. Got to meet up with my friend Dave Collins to talk about my new writing projects. Got to spend a couple days at my cabin in Talkeetna, where 20,320 ft. Denali (aka Mt. McKinley) looms on the horizon. I spent many an hour at the Talkeetna Roadhouse, my favorite place on Earth (see the photo of me with Trish Costello, the wonderful owner and master-chef). I had to get up three times a night to restoke the woodstove. Brrr!

Finally, after a succesful run in the UK, NZ, and Australia, my YA novel Edge of Nowhere will be available in the US and Canada this summer. Edge is one of my most successful books to date, and I hope it does even better in America. Learn more about it at www.johnsmelcer.com/books

Cold Rush!

I was in Reykjavik, Iceland recently. Had a great time even though it was January (a lot like Alaska). Great restaurants, coffee houses, bistros, and bars. You should go yourself!

A recent article

Binghamton University’s student-run newspaper, Pipe Dream, recently ran a wonderful story about me, hailing me as one of the university’s most interesting, inspirational, and most remarkable professors.

Vrrrrooommmmm!

My little baby daughter, Ayiana, turned nine months old in July. Here she is on daddy’s bike (and no, I don’t take her for rides). As you can imagine, my life has really changed . . . and all for the better! One of her pink onesies says, “My finger may be small, but I can wrap my daddy around it.” True!

Another peek.

Welcome, Ayiana!

I became a father again (my other daughter is 23 years oldĀ and graduated from college in early May)! I’d like to introduce the world to my daughter, Ayiana. She’s lovely and a blessing. She’s so cute and happy and healthy.
